What you will learn

  • Course Summary

  • Genetic engineering is a powerful technology that has dramatically affected our food production systems and has the potential to profoundly affect human health. This lecture will cover the history and science of genetic engineering and describe how it has been applied. It will also explore the benefits and risks that this technology has produced and could potentially offer. A perspective on the contributions of genetic engineering as well as alternative approaches will be provided.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

    • Describe how genetic engineering has been applied.
    • Identify benefits, risks and unknowns of this technology.
    • Discuss how this technology fits into our food production systems and health.

Course includes:

  • Video recording
  • Downloadable audio
  • Speaker handout(s)
  • 1 Quiz
  • Certificate of Completion

About Nigel
Dr. Crawford is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of California at San Diego. He has taught courses in nutrition, integrative medicine and plant biology to thousands of undergraduates. His research for the past 30 years has been in the field of plant molecular biology, studying (1) the biochemical mechanisms and genetic pathways that drive nitrate metabolism and signaling and (2) the mechanisms and regulation of DNA transposition in plants.
