 Course Description

What is this course about?

Americans struggled with low mood and depression prior to the pandemic, however the rates of depression among adults increased as the pandemic dragged on. Given the lively argument surrounding how impactful antidepressant medications actually are versus placebo, and if the actual impact is greater than the known side-effects, healthcare practitioners are looking for other options to help their patients struggling with depression and related symptoms. As science has allowed us to dive deeper and deeper into the world of the microbiome, we are discovering strains of probiotics with actions targeting neurotransmitters, catecholamines and inflammation. These strains go beyond simply supporting the gut-brain axis portion of the HPA axis and into targeted therapeutics.
