Course Description

Pain management requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates conventional and complementary therapies to improve patient outcomes. This course explores evidence-based integrative modalities for pain relief, including chiropractic manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, acupuncture, herbal medicine, movement therapy (Pilates), and nutrition.

Participants will review the latest research on how manual therapies, exercise, and botanical interventions influence pain perception and modulation. The session will also focus on implementing integrative strategies into clinical practice to create personalized, multimodal pain management plans.

Course Outline

Meet Your Faculty

Brent Anderson, PT, PhD, OCS, NCPT

Dr. Anderson is a licensed physical therapist and orthopedic-certified specialist who has practiced physical therapy for more than 30 years. In 1989, he received his degree in physical therapy from the University of California San Francisco and completed his studies in the Pilates method with Elizabeth Larkam at the Center for Sports Medicine at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, California. He continued to learn from first- and second-generation Pilates teachers, including Eve Gentry, Carola Trier, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel, Mary Bowen, Jean-Claude West, and Alan Herdman. As the founder and CEO of Polestar, a global Pilates education company established in 1992, Dr. Anderson has expanded Pilates education to over 60 countries. He played a significant role in developing the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) Certification Program and served on the PMA Certification Commission.

Gilda Gilak, DC,MS, QME

Dr. Gilak received her undergraduate degree from Azad University, her M.S. in Human Nutrition from the University of the Western States, and her D.C. from the Southern California University of Health Sciences. He is past president of the California Chiropractic Association of Orange County. She is a clinical faculty member at Southern California University of Health and Sciences, CA, and a former professor of Biochem Nutrition from 2020 to 2022. She is currently a Functional Medicine selective at Southern California University. Dr. Gilak honed her skills by working in various multidisciplinary practices, expanding her knowledge. She has been a Chiropractic Examiner for the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners to evaluate future chiropractors for clinical care competency.

S. Prasad Vinjamury, MD (Ayurveda), DACM, MPH

Dr. Prasad is a Professor at Southern California University of Health and Sciences (SCU) teaching traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. He is the Assistant Director of Eastern Medicine Department and the Director of Integrative and Family Health Services, SCU Health. He provides acupuncture and Ayurveda medicine services at the University Health Center, Whittier. Dr. Vinjamury has over thirty years in clinical experience in integrating Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, and western diagnostic methods to evaluate, assess, and manage patients. In addition to his teaching and clinical services, he is also deeply involved in clinical research in complementary and integrative medicine (CIM). He has been a Principal Investigator of studies on Fibromyalgia, Hypertension, Insomnia, Cancer and Osteoporosis. He has presented papers on various subjects in several national and international conferences and also published many articles on CIM topics in peer-reviewed journals.
